Deep-dive: Non-State and Subnational Action Guide of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT)

24 May 2022
9:00-10:30 hrs Perú

About the event

The Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) has developed the Non-State and Subnational Action Guide to help policymakers and analysts identify, quantify and integrate the impacts of non-state and subnational actions. With this information it is possible to improve national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trajectories and climate policies.

In order to increase the accessibility of the guides in Spanish-speaking countries, especially in the Latin American and Caribbean region, the guide has been translated into Spanish and a webinar was held on May 10th. In this event, the benefits of using the guide and why it is important to apply it were presented. Andrés Flores, Director of Climate Change and Energy of the World Resources Institute (WRI) presented the main features of the guide as well as its applications. In addition, Sebastián Garín, Coordinator of the HuellaChile Program at the Ministry of Environment of Chile, shared Chile’s experience using the guide.  The recording and materials of the webinar can be found at the following link: https://www.ledslac.org/webinars/guia-accion-no-estatal-y-subnacional-iniciativa-transparencia-accion-climatica-icat/

After the webinar, we explored the interest of the participants in attending a deep-dive session in which the guide and the process of applying it are presented in more depth, answering different questions such as: How long does it take to apply the guide? What resources are necessary to apply it? In addition, the aim is for those interested to learn about the ICAT application process.

Purpose of the event

That the target audience knows in more detail how they can apply the guide and that in the future, it can be more widely used in the LAC region.

Expected results

At the end of the session, attendees are expected to take away the following:

  • Theoretical and practical understanding of the Non-State and Subnational Action Guidance of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT).
  • An understanding of how the guidance enables quantification of the impact of Non-State and Subnational Action on national GHG reduction targets.
  • In addition, participants will take away a document prepared by LEDS LAC of key messages and elements of the session to enable them to continue learning.
