It is known that most of the forests in the region that are not under the category of protected areas are in the hands of communities. Therefore, the question arises: is the community forestry a strategy for conservation and development? This question is valid if we consider the report of the ITTO and FAO which concluded that until 1990 there were no cases of good management in tropical America (except one case in Trinidad). So, are there really successful cases of community forest management in Latin America?<\/p>\n

Both presentations answered these questions with case studies. The first of doing a tour of the status of community forest management in several countries in the region (Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Dominican Republic) for a second presentation focusing on the world’s largest community forestry project, the case of the community concessions in the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala, who had many lessons to share.<\/p>\n

Fernando Carrera Gambetta
\n<\/strong>Forest engineer, professor, and researcher, at CATIE. He has more than 25 years of experience in forest management in several countries in the region. Currently the activities of the forestry component of Regional Climate Change Program Manager USAID and the Ibero-American Model Forest Network.<\/p>\n

Julio Javier Madrid Cruz
\n<\/strong>He is Bachelor of Environmental Education of San Carlos University in Guatemala.
