Paulo Artaxo.<\/strong> Professor of Physics, University of Sao Paulo.<\/p>\nComments by Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.<\/strong> Climate and Energy Leader, WWF International.<\/p>\nAbout the webinar<\/strong><\/h2>\nThe Paris Agreement aims to hold temperature increase well below 2.0\u00b0C – further to 1.5\u00b0C. The Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5\u00b0C (SR15) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), refines the message of its 5th assessment report (2014) that large scale carbon removal has to be part of the global effort to balance out emissions left after ambitious reduction efforts to reach net-zero. To stay within 1.5\u00b0C, this has to occur within 30 years. Compatible pathways involve a mix of large scale biological and\/or technological carbon removal processes (referred to as CDR). The report recognizes that all these techniques still involve uncertainties around feasibility, sustainability, and represent major governance challenges.<\/p>\n
The webinar will provide an overview of the main findings of the IPCC in relation to large scale CDR techniques, their governance challenges, all in in relation to Low Emission Development Strategies. She represented Brazil in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations during more than 15 years, particularly on issues related to land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), research and systematic observation, and reporting guidelines. He has participated in the development of environmental policy frameworks in many countries, as an advisor to decision-makers and many project initiatives.
