About the webinar<\/span><\/h2>\n

This webinar provided an introduction to the concept of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and examples applied in Latin America and the Caribbean. This concept was developed by FAO in 2010 to highlight the role of agriculture to meet the challenges of food security, development and the fight against climate change. The CSA aims to improve the ability of agricultural systems to support food security, and incorporate the need for adaptation and mitigation options in sustainable agricultural development strategies. And thus it helps countries to weigh and determine options involving a maximum benefit, recognizing that the implementation of these options depends on the context and the capacity of each country. Some examples of FAO\u00b4s support in the development of public policies in LAC are briefly presented.<\/p>\n

After the general presentation, the case of Colombia on the strategy \u00abSustainable Agriculture in a Changing Climate\u00bb was presented, an ambitious project for adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural sector, involving a partnership with producers\u2019 organizations in the country to cope with climate variability and climate change, And that is developed in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the country and CIAT.<\/p>\n

About the speakers<\/span><\/h2>\n

Laura Meza. Senior Advisor, FAO.<\/strong>
Agronomist, with a Masters in Environmental Science (MSc) from the State University of New York (SUNY) and a Masters (MA) in International Relations from Maxwell School of Public Affairs-Syracuse University. It has professional experience of more than 15 years as a researcher and expert in the management of natural resources and environment. Since 2008, she advises the Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), on issues relating to the adaptation of production systems and supports the design of agricultural policies around to climate change. It has supported various processes related to climate change in Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, among others.<\/p>\n

Jeimar Tapasco. Researcher, CIAT.<\/strong>
Agronomist with a Masters in Systems Analysis Farming, and PhD in Economics.
