The webinar aims to present the key messages and the main decisions adopted at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which took place in Dubai in December 2023, and to reflect on their implications on the road to the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), integrating the perspectives of different stakeholders in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

COP 30, to be held in Brazil in 2025, represents a crucial milestone that will highlight the region's challenges and prospects towards the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C by the end of the decade. In that year, countries will have to present their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with a much more ambitious vision and a greater sense of urgency.

The LEDS LAC Platform and its partners are working on a Regional Roadmap towards COP 30 that will (i) promote and renew high-level political and business commitment, (ii) coordinate and strengthen initiatives and actions of state and non-state actors, and (iii) systematize and disseminate key messages from the region, its progress, needs and opportunities to achieve ambitious goals, as well as successful cases and solutions to be replicated and scaled up in the region.

Introduction to the event

In a world increasingly aware of environmental and sustainability challenges, PtX products and derivatives have emerged as an innovative solution to address various energy and environmental issues. These products, obtained through electrolysis and chemical synthesis processes from renewable sources, have demonstrated significant potential to decarbonize several key industries, as well as to drive the transition to a cleaner and more resilient economy.

This webinar will provide a comprehensive understanding of the international markets for PtX products and derivatives, and how companies can capitalize on the opportunities offered by these growing markets. In addition, through concrete case studies, we will highlight the practical application of successful strategies that have led companies to conquer global markets with PtX derivative products, including ammonia.

Introduction to the event

In recent years, green hydrogen has emerged as one of the key solutions in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Its potential to address energy and environmental challenges has generated growing interest around the world.

As the hydrogen industry rapidly advances, it is crucial to equip hydrogen professionals and leaders with the necessary tools to make strategic decisions and carry out hydrogen projects effectively.

In this context, this webinar aims to provide participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to scale green hydrogen and PtX projects effectively and successfully, from kilowatt, megawatt to gigawatt scale. As we move forward in the development of the hydrogen industry and its derivatives, it is essential to be equipped with the right knowledge and tools, so it is important to acquire the necessary skills to drive the implementation and scalability of green hydrogen projects, thus contributing to a more sustainable and cleaner energy future.

We will therefore explore the opportunities and challenges associated with the production and use of green hydrogen, analyzing in detail the tools available for the analysis of hydrogen and its derivatives. These tools allow us to assess the technical and economic feasibility of projects, as well as to make informed decisions on their design and development.

Finally, we will present detailed case study examples that will illustrate how these tools work in concrete situations, regardless of the geographical location of the project. In this way, participants will gain a broad and applicable vision for different contexts.

Objectives of the event

The objective of this webinar is to provide participants with the tools necessary to make informed decisions about the type of hydrogen projects to be developed. In addition, it seeks to guide participants through the project design process, so that by the end of the webinar they will have a clear understanding of how to apply these tools to their own applications.

During the webinar, a high-level analysis will address three of the different tools available for the analysis of hydrogen and its derivatives. It will highlight these tools and explain how they can be used to assess the technical and economic feasibility of projects:

H2A: Hydrogen Analysis Production Models: Eassess the technical and economic feasibility of hydrogen production systems. Its practical utility includes cost assessment, design optimization, feasibility assessment and strategic planning for renewable energy and fuel cell projects. It enables informed and strategic decisions to drive the transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy.

RODeO: Revenue, Operation, and Device Optimization: It is a plant design tool that allows a comprehensive optimization taking into account aspects of revenue, operation and devices. Its usefulness lies in the fact that it goes beyond conventional design, since it considers both investment costs (CAPEX) and operating costs (OPEX) in terms of capacity in megawatts (MW). This provides a more complete, integrated and accurate view to maximize revenues and optimize the operation of the plant as a whole.

SERA: Scenario Evaluation and Regionalization Analysis Model: Its usefulness lies in its ability to evaluate scenarios and perform regionalization analysis. It enables users to model different scenarios, assess the impact of strategic decisions and optimize the supply chain based on factors such as geographic location, resource availability, market demand and logistics costs. With SERA, organizations can make informed, strategic decisions to improve efficiency, reduce costs and maximize profitability in their supply chain operations.

Detailed case study examples will be presented to show how these tools work in a specific context. These examples will be selected to be relevant regardless of the geographical location of the project, thus providing a broad and applicable view to different scenarios, at three levels:

Supply chain: How your project can fit into a hydrogen value chain considering demand centers, export ports, renewable resources, power grid, among others.

Hydrogen plant design: How should the design be, what technologies should be used or combined with each other to define the optimal design of the systems (combinations with solar, wind or other).

Process operation: How to determine energy consumption, water consumption, balance of plant, additional equipment required, compositions of each of the process streams, etc.

At the end of the webinar, participants will have the necessary tools to make informed decisions in the planning and design of hydrogen projects. In addition, they will have gained practical knowledge on how to use these tools in a case study, which will allow them to apply that knowledge to their own applications and projects.

Background

The LEDS LAC platform, in its line of work on knowledge management, has been presenting since 2015 the LEDSenLAC report, which systematizes and contains information on the progress and challenges of some of the countries in the region regarding the design and formulation of different actions that allow them to move towards a climate compatible path.
The fourth edition of the LEDSenLAC report is supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the EUROCLIMA program, through the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The report is a useful document to support professionals, technicians and decision makers who promote climate action in Latin America and the Caribbean. It incorporates the progress of twenty-seven countries The objective is to analyze the quality of progress and the integration of climate goals with broader national and sectoral planning frameworks in the region regarding the implementation of the first generation of NDCs and the content and characteristics of the second generation of NDCs (presentation of new or updated NDCs).
To integrate all the objectives of the LEDSenLAC 2022 report, a conceptual framework was established based on the methodological work of the previous report and redefined the grouping of components inspired by the NDC assessment approach of the UNDP Climate Promise initiative and the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP) framework of the NDC Partnership Platform. Similarly, the conceptual framework incorporates aspects of different dimensions of articulation that are considered important for implementing the NDCs, taking up and redefining key aspects of the EUROCLIMA Thematic Study 13 approach.
After a brief presentation of the content and main findings of the report, a panel of representatives from government and support agencies/programs (IDB, UNDP and EUROCLIMA) will give their perspective on the findings and discuss those factors that facilitated and strengthened the implementation of the NDCs.

Introduction to the event
The LEDS LAC platform is the Latin American and Caribbean platform of the Global Climate Action Partnership - GCAP (formerly known as LEDS GP). LEDS LAC was launched in 2012, with the objective of being the platform for collaboration and peer-to-peer learning that drives and supports the region's transition towards resilient and low-emission development. Under the strategic guidance of its steering committee and following a demand-driven model, over the last ten years LEDS LAC has implemented a series of activities and lines of work that have matured into what is now a network of practitioners in each country of the region promoting a diversity of climate actions. To date, the thematic communities of practice, regional events, innovation processes as well as all knowledge management products, all in collaboration with different partners in the region, reflect the road travelled. It is our turn to celebrate and look to the future in order to continue moving forward together.

Introduction to the event
To meet the 1.5°C targets of the Paris Agreement and those of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a systemic shift away from carbon-intensive models is necessary. In this context, the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) has developed the "Assessment Guide on Transformational Change"to help understand the relationship between policies and actions and their expected or achieved transformational impact. A transformational change is one that is fundamental and sustained to a system that disrupts established carbon-intensive practices and contributes to a low-carbon society.
In order to increase the accessibility of the guides in Spanish-speaking countries, especially in the Latin America and Caribbean region, the guide has been translated into Spanish and a webinar on August 2 and a deepening session on August 9. At the last event, the steps of the guide were presented in detail and its possible uses were explored.
Objective of the event
That the target audience learns more about the experiences by applying the guide.

Mirko dal Maso, former consultant of UNEP Copenhagen Climate Center, presented the main features of the guide as well as its applications. Additionally, Ana Lucia Moya Mora, Project Manager (CBIT-Costa Rica) of the UN Environment Program, shared Costa Rica's experience using the guide.
